  3. The Framework

The Naace EdTech Review Framework is a powerful online tool for school improvement through the use of education technology.

Education technology leaders have recognised over many years that the benchmarking process offered through the online ERF is the most effective way of determining where a school is in terms of education technology development and — more importantly — how best to plan the next steps.

The framework has been in existence for over twenty years and is regularly updated to reflect the changing scene of technology in schools. The most recent update was in 2021. To date, over 16,000 schools have taken advantage of the ERF online system.

Structure

The six elements

  1. Leadership and management

Vision, strategy, budgeting and accountability for technology across the school.

  2. Teaching and learning with technology

How technology is used in lessons, and whether it changes what pupils can do.

  3. Assessment of digital capability

How the school knows what pupils can actually do with technology.

  4. Digital safeguarding

Policy, filtering, monitoring, curriculum and culture around online safety.

  5. Professional development

How staff build confidence and capability, and how that is sustained.

  6. Resources and technology

Infrastructure, devices, procurement and technical support.

The full framework document for each of the six elements is available by logging in to the ERF and opening the Support Resources area. A separate guide is available for EYFS settings.

Getting started

Three steps to access the ERF

Before that, the six overview questions help you see which of the six elements are least well developed in your school, so you know where to start. They're in the support resources area of the ERF.

  1. Create a Naace School Member account

This gives you access to the membership site. Check your junk or spam folder for the verification email.

  2. Add two more staff accounts — optional

Create individual accounts for the two additional members of staff who need access to the framework.

  3. Email us to finish the setup

Contact membership@naace.org.uk once the accounts exist and we'll complete your ERF setup. You'll receive your account details within 48 hours.

For more information on the ERF, or general enquiries, contact our team at erfsupport@naace.org.uk.
